What to Expect from an In-Home Vet Visit
For most people, the first in-home vet visit comes with a few questions: What actually happens? How long does it take? What should I have ready? Do I need to do anything differently than I would for a clinic visit?
Here's a straightforward walkthrough of what to expect — from booking through to the end of the visit — so you and your pet can be as relaxed as possible when we arrive.
Before the visit
How to prepare.
A little preparation goes a long way — not just for us, but for your pet's experience during the exam.
Send medical records
If you have records from a previous vet, email them to us before the visit. Vaccination history, prior bloodwork, and any diagnoses help us provide better continuity of care from the start.
Choose a calm space
Pick a quiet room where your pet feels comfortable — not the most chaotic area of the house. A familiar blanket or bed nearby helps. For cats, containing them to one room before we arrive makes the exam go more smoothly.
Secure other pets
If you have multiple pets, keeping non-patient animals in another room reduces distractions and stress for the pet being examined. Dogs especially can pick up on each other's anxiety.
Prepare a sample if needed
If a fecal or urine sample has been requested, collect it that morning and keep it in a clean sealed container. Fresh samples give the most accurate results.
Write down your questions
It's easy to forget things once the visit starts. A short list — diet questions, behavioral changes, anything you've noticed — means nothing gets left out. No question is too small.
Large dogs on a leash
For dogs over about 30 lbs, having them on a leash when we arrive helps with the initial introduction. Once your dog has settled, we'll take it from there.
During the visit
What actually happens, step by step.
1
Arrival and introduction
We take a few minutes to let your pet get used to our presence before the exam begins. Rushing the introduction creates anxiety — a calm start makes everything easier for everyone.
2
History and questions
We'll ask about your pet's recent health, diet, behavior, and any concerns you have. This is also the time to bring up your own questions. We're not in a hurry.
3
Physical examination
A thorough head-to-tail exam — weight, body condition, eyes, ears, teeth, heart and lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, skin, coat, and joints. We explain what we're doing and what we find as we go.
4
Vaccinations and diagnostics
Any due vaccines are administered. If bloodwork, a fecal test, or other diagnostics are needed, samples are collected. We'll explain what we're testing for and when to expect results.
5
Treatment and medications
If treatment is needed, we'll discuss options, costs, and next steps before proceeding. We carry commonly prescribed medications and can send prescriptions to a pharmacy or your online pharmacy account.
6
Care plan and wrap-up
We'll walk through any follow-up care, medication schedules, dietary changes, or when to book the next visit. You'll leave with a clear plan — nothing left vague.
Good to know
A few things first-time clients often ask.
How long does a visit take?
Most visits are 30 to 90 minutes depending on what's needed. We don't rush. If your pet needs extra time to settle, we take it.
Can multiple pets be seen in one visit?
Yes — the travel fee is per visit, not per pet. Just let us know when booking so we can allow adequate time. Seeing multiple pets at once is one of the most practical advantages of in-home care.
What if my pet is anxious or difficult to handle?
Tell us when booking. We use Fear-Free techniques and we're patient. An anxious pet at a clinic is often dramatically calmer at home — that's a large part of why in-home care exists. If sedation is ever appropriate we'll discuss it openly.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Payment is due at the time of service. Cash, check, and Zelle are preferred. Credit and debit cards are accepted with a 3% processing fee.
